After the engagement, often times the future bride’s mind turns quickly to the planning of the big event. So many plans have to be made: date of the wedding, location of the wedding and reception, flowers, bridal gown, who will be part of the bridal party, what the bridal party will wear and much more. While I was planning my wedding, I found one of the most, if not the most difficult decision was choosing what my bridesmaids would wear.
It was amazing how agreeable the matron of honor and the bridesmaids were when I asked if they would be in the bridal party. I remember much excitement, laughter and even “happy” tears, when I asked them this question. Quickly, this excitement turned to frustration and “unhappy” tears. I planned a “pick a bridesmaid’s dress” party. We had food, fellowship, and lots of bridal magazines and searched many virtual bridal shops on the internet. I was so thrilled that the “my girls” could have some quality time with me and be an integral part of my decision making. To my surprise, the bridal party became maidzillas (bridesmaids gone wild). Each one had her opinion and demands as what she thought would be the best dress. Instead of a fun, enjoyable time choosing the dress, the party turned into a cry fest. There were arguments about the style, color, sleeves versus strapless, length of dress, and even the type of fabric. I was shocked by their reaction; all of us had always gotten along very well.
I spent much time over the next few weeks trying to keep the peace with the future bridesmaids. Deep down I knew I had to regain control of this situation. A bridesmaid intervention/dinner party was planned for my bridesmaids. Calmly and loving I reminded the group of girls that ultimately I would make the decision on “the” dress. Shortly after that “intervention”, I made the decision by myself. I presented my choice to my bridesmaids without any complaints.
My advice to all future brides is to always remain in control of your bridal party. If they love you, they will respect your decisions and for your wedding day they will wear any dress you choose.
